Last weekend we kicked off the season with our Happy Squid Youth Tournament! We saw some great fencing and it was the first tournament for several fencers. Unfortunately only one fencer showed up for Y10 Mixed Epee, so we hope somebody comes to challenge Natalie at the next HYC tournament in December!
In Y12, we had 9 fencers, who finished as follows: 1 – James, 2 – Javy, 3 (tie) – Ella and Tristan, 5 – Liam, 6 – Mikaysoi, 7 – Natalie, 8 – Harper, 9 – Rory.
In Y14, the placings were: 1 – Kalina, 2 – James, 3 (tie) – Cole and Tristan, 5 – Javy, 6 – Kai, 7 – Harper.
In Cadet, Kalina was 1st, Jackson was 2nd, and Tristan and Malakai tied for 3rd!
Juniors saw the addition of Jack in 1st place; Kalina ended 2nd, Malakai and Jackson tied for 3rd, and Tristan finished in 5th.
Five of our fencers traveled to Columbus, OH for Summer Nationals, and they all built on their results from earlier in the season. Cheryl finished 19th in Vet-50 Women’s Epee. Kalina placed 35th in Y14 WE and 20th in Y12 WE. Ella also fenced in Y12, her first national-level event and tied for 173rd. In Y10 WE, she tied for 75th! Jack came in 198th in D2 Men’s Epee and 94th in D3 ME. Finally, James – also at his first national-level event, finished 72nd in Y10 ME. Way to go, all!
The final results are in – the ’23-’24 HYC season is a wrap! The league uses this formula [((entries – place + 1) / entries) x 100] to calculate points and determines ranking from the fencer’s best 3 results added together. Twenty-three individuals competed across 5 events throughout the season.
Y10: 1 – James (300) 2 – Javy (222) 3 – Ella (210) 4 – Natalie D. (160) 5 – Harper J. (LFC) (33) 6 – Natalie G. (20)

Last weekend was the last Heartland Youth (and Cadet & Junior) Circuit tournament of the ’23-’24 season! We saw some great fencing, some things we can work to improve, and we had fun!
Y10 Epee: 1 – Ella 2 – James 3 – Javy & Natalie D.
Y12 Epee: 1 – Kalina 2 – James 3 – Javy & Ella 5 – Kai 6 – Natalie D. 7 – Colton 8 – Liam 9 – Abigail
Last weekend, Cheryl traveled to Salt Lake City to fence at the April North American Cup. In Vet-50 Women’s Epee, she finished 11th, and in Vet Open WE she ended 42nd.
Seven RDF kids and one adult fenced at DMFC’s Duel in Des Moines in West Des Moines last weekend! It was the first tournament outside our club for many of the kids, and it was fun to fence some kids from other clubs.
In Y12 Mixed Epee, James won the gold medal, Javy & Abby tied for 3rd, Liam finished 5th, Harper was 7th, Lucy came in 10th, and Natalie was 11th.
In Senior Mixed Epee, Mat tied for 3rd (and finished 2nd in saber).
Ella and Kalina traveled to St. Louis last weekend and fenced well in their events. In Y12 Women’s Epee, Kalina took home the gold medal and Ella took home bronze!
The next morning, Ella fenced in Y10 Women’s Epee and took home the silver medal after a 10-9 loss where she made a really good change to almost catch up.
Y14 Women’s Epee was a more challenging event for Kalina and a good example of why every point matters in pools; she was one of 3 people with 5 victories (in a pool of eight), so indicators (the difference between the number of points you scored and the number of times you got hit) were used to determine first seed into the direct elimination round. But long story short, Kalina ended up winning Y14, too!
We had a great time fencing the third tournament in the Heartland Youth Circuit last weekend! We had our biggest event to date – 11 kids in Y12 – and it was the first tournament for Harper, Colton, and Henry. Everyone’s fencing has noticeably improved over the past few months, and it was fun to see the kids’ hard work paying off! Here are the results:
